Course Description
This course introduces students to a variety of religious traditions through an examination of myths, legends, and folklore. Mythology of ancient and contemporary religions will be explored in conjunction with the history, beliefs, rituals, and iconography of the culture. The goal of the course is three-fold: first, to learn about the mythology and religion of seven different traditions; second, to appreciate the role that a particular version of a myth plays in its meaning; and third, to gain the tools to understand and analyze the meaning of a myth. We will focus primarily on three distinct mythic themes: creation, flood, and the hero’s quest.
