French Cinema

Course Description
This course on French cinema will cover movies from the beginning of Cinema in Paris (1905), the Golden Age Period (1928-1939), the Dark Years (1940-1945), The New Wave (1958-1984), The Cinema du Look (1985-1990) to present. We will feature a wide range of movies that will not only shed light on French culture, history and civilization, but also will allow students to compare it with North American and World Cinema. As well classes will be devoted to the learning of cinematographic techniques (editing, narrative, plot, shots, etc). The course will be taught in English. Essays and exams will be written in English, but students who want to count this course towards a French minor or major are required to write their essays and exam in French.
